Design Styles we’re Loving for 2023

We truly believe that your home should be a reflection of you and what you love, however, as designers we can’t help but notice and get excited when we see great things trending in the industry. We’ve found that the more people that see and adopt interior design trends, the more we get to work with people who are willing to take a leap of faith and try something new and out-of-the-box. And isn’t it nice to be different than everyone else?

The main things we’re seeing for 2023 are BOLD STATEMENTS. We love light, bright, white spaces just as much as the next person, but it’s also refreshing to see people expressing their personalities through the design of their homes!

Arches are here to stay. They’ve been used in design and architecture for thousands of years and add a beautiful statement to any home. Recently we’ve been seeing arches in fantastic bold ways such as large statement windows, sometimes with inset doors and sometimes without. Either way, these large openings bring in a ton of natural light while adding architectural detail and visual interest to a space.

Arched openings are one of the most common uses of this shape in residential projects and now we’re seeing them cased in wood or painted materials to highlight and bring interest to these pass-throughs.

Arched doors can be installed in cased openings to provide separation between spaces. Pocket doors are a great solution in this case as they can be carefully concealed when not needed, however, the reeded glass doors we’re seeing everywhere are a great way to make a beautiful statement while still allowing light to filter between spaces.

Arched cabinetry is also a beautiful detail that’s being utilized primarily in character homes to elevate kitchens and bathrooms. Paired with reeded glass or a bold paint colour these cabinets can be simple in overall design but their arched shape adds a layer of interest to otherwise predominantly functional spaces.

When designing a kitchen we love making the range the focal point. As the central hub of the home the kitchen needs to be functional, yes, but there’s no reason that it can’t also be beautiful. This integral space in your home is used and seen everyday so why not add some visual interest? We’re big fans of range hood boxes for concealing the ventilation but what if you were to take it a step further and add stone, metal, plaster, or fluting?

We’re obsessed with the spice storage in Cella Jane’s kitchen (above left)! It’s been tucked away with panels behind the range and the extra overall depth allows for a beautifully flush fridge to the left of the range. Well thought out details paired with beautiful materials are always a win in our books.

The kitchen from Est. Living (above right) instantly draws your eye to the range with a dramatic stone hood. We especially like the juxtaposition between the modern cabinetry and the character details in the crown, range, and delicate brass rails on the wood shelves.

Alternatively, you could really stand out by installing a range hood that contrasts all of the other finishes in the space. Go for wood like Sola Kitchens (above, far left), shiny brass like M. House Inc. (above, middle), or brushed brass like Studio Lifestyle (above, far right). Each of these hoods makes a statement and integrates with the rest of the space without sacrificing function!

We love that people are getting more comfortable with adding colour to their spaces that isn’t just white, grey, or beige! It’s always refreshing when we work with clients that are open to experimenting with colour and are willing to do something different. We’ve seen many spaces over the last year or so painted with moody tones. We especially love when we see that the walls AND trim have all been painted with the same colour and finish like the spaces below from Heidi Caillier Design, Monica Fried Design, and Sean Anderson Design. Moody tones are cozy, classic, and beautiful!

Why be the same when you can be different? Stand out from the crowd by utilizing bold stone choices through a dramatic colour or pattern. Don’t be afraid to choose a beautiful, dramatic slab of stone for your fireplace, wet bar, kitchen, or anywhere else your heart desires. Pair it with solid colours, neutral choices, and toned down furniture and accessories to make it really stand out!

We love when people can boldly be themselves. If you’ve been waiting for a sign to be bold with your home and take a leap of faith, this is it! This is your year! And remember, if you love it, it’ll never go out of style.

Which of these would you be open to trying?
